BIO

Joel Michael Valley is a graduate of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. He has collaborated with talented teams of reporters, editors and photographers, and currently works with the Temple Daily Telegram as a full-time reporter.

His recent work includes covering, writing and editing informative articles about multimillion-dollar bond elections in Central Texas, capital murder trials, student and faculty features, and COVID-19 pandemic coverage.

However, he also has researched and written on topics that include campus diversity, domestic politics and homelessness awareness.

During his time outside of the Temple Daily Telegram newsroom, Joel enjoys the opportunity to relay people’s gratitude toward organ donation and transplantation through his freelance work with MTF Biologics — a New Jersey-based foundation where he writes and edits patient and stakeholder testimonials for use in social media, printed materials, company website and other promotional mediums.

Joel also has worked with Education Week as the publication's lone photo intern in 2018. He identified photography needs and reviewed, edited, and approved images for publication. Working in tandem with the director of photography, Joel sourced images for Education Week’s PBS NewsHour program, and utilized social-media to promote photographic work to engage and build reader interest.

Joel is from Houston and an avid fan of the Texans, Rockets and Astros.
